Gen Con and Back Again

It's been a whirlwind of a month, and I felt an update was in order! So many projects and activities and events to keep track of. I thought I'd check in and offer the highlights, in case you missed the website updates!

Overpowered has released! David and I are very proud of our little strategy game, and eager to get more people to join in the fun. Guide your explorer bot through a map from any adventure designed for dungeon-crawling tabletop roleplaying game, using your devices to power through Obstacles and collect Overpower, the special excess energy that lets your bot accomplish incredible things (and doubles as the Player's high score)! We followed the new rules release with our first Monthly Challenge, featuring prizes for the top three high scorers. Tabletop roleplaying game books are up for the winning, and you can try out our system—what's not to love? I also released the Overpowered Quickstart video right before heading off to Gen Con. If you'd like to try before you buy the ruleset, use that video to show you how to navigate the app and start you on your way.

Gen Con has come and gone! I GMed for Monte Cook Games for the second year in a row, and had a wonderful time as always. This was my first time GMing a Cypher game at a convention, and I loved getting a feel for how the system runs in that high-energy setting. I also ran a trio of Stealing Stories for the Devil games, my favorite 4-hour gaming experience, released by MCG just last year. The collaborative improvisational nature of the game is second-to-none, and the crazy situations players get themselves into make for the best of stories. Some highlights from this year's games were a food fight between a tech genius and a conceited artist with a wig addiction, a shootout between Irish and Italian mobsters at a carnival, and a Romeo and Juliet story between the son of a generic electronics store and the snooty manager of the Apple store, next to each other in the same shopping mall. All in all, another successful adventure in gaming! Thanks to Tammi, Charles, and Kate for facilitating another wonderful GM experience.

The Theurgists' Vault is nearly ready for unveiling! When I got back from Gen Con, we made the final push for completion of the gameplay booklets, which guide participants through their journey. My fellow Roll of Destiny members prepped the draft design while I was away, and we pushed it through to final in the three days following my return. The product is beautiful to behold, and the printers will have it ready in time for the Ohio Renaissance Festival's opening weekend, which is what matters most. Supplies are ordered, volunteer materials have been provided, and everything is progressing well. Opening weekend is September 2-4, all three days of Labor Day weekend, and the Festival runs every weekend, rain or shine, through October 28-29. I can't wait to see what people think of my next immersive game!

Lastly, here's a quick sampling of what's next on the docket for my creative endeavors.

  • I'm editing some chapters for Heart of Darkness, a 5e campaign featuring fiendish deals, Archfey worship, and several sandbox adventures to keep a party occupied as they explore the continent of Varris. In trade, Viktor Sych, the campaign's creator, is making some art for an adventure I've written and hope to release by the end of this year. Stay tuned for more about Unspoken!

  • I've partnered with a couple friends on a project called Mimicnomicon. It's an anthology of mimics (you know, the monsters that look like everyday objects) for all sorts of different settings. We'll be releasing these in a series of location packets, every few months, and eventually hope to release the complete anthology as a finished book!

That's all for now! Thanks for taking interest in my many fanciful endeavors. I'm excited to bring you more moving forward!

~Hannah
